Anubias Barteri 'Marble'

Broad, glossy leaves splashed with irregular cream and white variegation — the only Anubias in the catalog with patterned foliage, and one of the most visually distinctive low-tech plants available.

Green & Cream Variegated Leaves Each Leaf Pattern Unique Rhizome — Do Not Bury No CO₂ Required Low to Medium Light Collector Variety

Anubias barteri 'Marble' is the variegated form of the barteri group — a cultivar whose broad, glossy leaves carry irregular splashes, sectors, and patches of cream, white, and pale yellow against the deep green base color, creating a marbled pattern that is different on every individual leaf and never repeated exactly across the plant. It is the only Anubias in the catalog with patterned rather than solid foliage, and the only low-tech plant in the catalog that delivers visual interest through leaf pattern rather than form, color saturation, or iridescence. The variegation is chimeric in origin — a stable genetic condition rather than a disease or deficiency — and persists reliably across new growth under appropriate conditions. The broad, oval leaf form is consistent with standard Anubias barteri, bringing the same substantial midground presence, the same glossy surface, the same deep green base, and the same slow, reliable rhizome growth — with the marbled overlay making each new leaf an individual object worth examining closely. Like all Anubias, it attaches to driftwood and stone, requires no CO₂ or substrate planting, and is fully safe with all Neocaridina, Caridina shrimp, and snails.

Appearance & Growth Over Time

Irregular cream and white variegation unique to every leaf — the marbled pattern on Anubias 'Marble' is not a repeating or consistent print but a genuinely irregular distribution of cream, white, and pale yellow sectors within a deep green base that varies between leaves, between growth periods, and between individual plants. Some leaves are predominantly green with small cream flecks; others are broadly sectored with large pale areas covering half or more of the leaf surface. No two leaves on a mature plant are identical — the pattern is always a discovery. Variegation is a stable chimeric trait — not a deficiency — the pale areas on variegated Anubias result from a chimeric cell condition in which sectors of the leaf lack chlorophyll-producing cells, producing pale or white tissue alongside normal green tissue. This is a stable, inherited genetic characteristic of the cultivar — not a sign of nutrient deficiency, disease, or stress. The variegation will not revert to solid green under better conditions, and pale leaves are not damaged or unhealthy leaves that require correction. Heavily variegated leaves grow more slowly and are more delicate — leaves with large pale sectors contain less photosynthetically active tissue than fully green leaves, which means they contribute less to the plant's overall energy production and are more sensitive to stress, rough handling, and parameter instability than leaves with predominantly green patterning. Leaves that are more than 70–80% pale or white are beautiful but functionally fragile — they should be handled minimally and the plant kept in stable conditions to preserve them. Variegation pattern shifts between growth periods — new leaves produced by Anubias 'Marble' will not necessarily match the variegation pattern of the previous leaf or the overall pattern of the established plant. A period of heavily variegated growth may be followed by leaves with less or differently distributed pale sectors, and vice versa. This variation between leaves over time is normal and is part of the plant's character — each new leaf is a small event worth noting. The only patterned-foliage plant in the Anubias catalog — every other Anubias in the catalog — barteri, Nana, Afzelii, Golden, and Nana Petite — contributes to a layout through leaf form, scale, and solid color. Marble contributes through pattern: the marbled surface breaks up the solid-toned plant mass of a low-tech layout and introduces a visual element that no other species in the catalog replicates. In a layout composed entirely of solid-colored plants, a single well-placed Marble draws the eye and holds it in a way that a second or third solid-green plant does not. Rhizome must remain fully above substrate at all times — the horizontal connecting stem must never be buried or covered. Burial causes rot that spreads irreversibly through the plant. Attach to driftwood or stone with cotton thread or super glue gel, keeping the entire rhizome exposed to open water. In a plant as slow-growing and individually distinctive as Marble, losing the rhizome to rot from an avoidable mistake is a particularly significant loss.

Getting Started

1 Attach to driftwood or stone — never plant in substrate — secure the rhizome to driftwood or porous rock with cotton thread or a small amount of super glue gel, keeping the entire rhizome above substrate and exposed to open water at all times. Super glue gel sets quickly and holds the rhizome in contact with the hardscape surface while roots develop their own grip over the following weeks — the most reliable attachment method for a plant this valuable.
2 Position in a prominent, clearly visible location — Marble's value is in the detail of individual leaf patterning, which requires proximity and clear sightlines to appreciate fully. Place it in a foreground or near-midground position on hardscape where the leaf surface is easily visible from the front of the tank — not tucked behind other plants or positioned where the patterned leaves are partially obscured. A plant this distinctive deserves to be seen clearly.
3 Low to medium light with a consistent photoperiod — Marble thrives under the same low to medium light conditions as standard Anubias barteri. The pale, chlorophyll-reduced sectors of variegated leaves are more sensitive to high light intensity than fully green tissue — excessive light risks algae on the green portions and does not improve the variegation. A consistent 8–10 hour photoperiod at low to medium intensity maintains leaf quality and supports steady new growth.
4 Fertilize consistently but avoid nitrogen excess — liquid fertilization covering macros, micros, and iron supports healthy rhizome growth and the development of fully sized, richly patterned new leaves. Avoid very high nitrogen levels, which in some variegated plants can shift new growth toward more heavily green — less variegated — patterning. A balanced fertilizer dosed at moderate levels maintains the conditions that support the variegation without pushing toward one extreme.
💡 Bonus Tip

Anubias 'Marble' placed immediately beside standard deep-green Anubias barteri on the same piece of driftwood creates a within-genus contrast that is immediately legible and visually striking — the identical leaf form at identical scale means the eye reads the two plants as one species and then registers the pattern difference as a discovery rather than a comparison between unrelated plants. The marbled leaf surface is more vivid against the plain deep green of its closest relative than against any other plant in the catalog.

Choosing your portions, using the plant promotion, and knowing what to expect when your plants arrive.

Buy 2 Get 1 Free: add all three

Choose three eligible plant items and add all three to your cart, including the plant you want free. The discount applies automatically at checkout; no code is needed. Adding only two items does not add a third plant for you.

Mix and match eligible varieties or choose multiple quantities of the same eligible plant. The least expensive eligible item is free. For example, with eligible items priced at $5, $8 and $10, the $5 item is discounted and the plant subtotal is $18 before shipping and tax.

The offer repeats for complete qualifying groups: three eligible items give one free, six give two free, and nine give three free. The current offer has no per-order use limit. Items must be included in the promotion; Plant Weights and other non-plant accessories do not qualify.

An item means the sale unit in your cart. One bunch, cup, portion or multipack counts as one item when purchased at quantity one, not one item for every stem, leaf or bulb inside it. Check the listing and selected option for what each unit contains.

Check the discount and quantities in your order summary before paying. Other promotions can affect the final discount; multiple product discounts do not stack on the same item. This is an online checkout offer, not an automatic in-store POS discount.

Portions, sizes & what you receive

Read this plant’s description and selected option for its sale format, portion size and any stated stem or plant count. A bunch, loose portion, rooted plant, bulb, cup and mounted plant are different products; there is no single size or count that applies to every plant we sell.

A mature height or spread describes potential growth in an aquarium, not the size shipped. Use the advertised purchase portion to plan your order. A full carpet, dense moss-covered surface or established group in a photograph may require several portions and time to grow.

Do not assume that a pot, planting weight, rock, wood, substrate or other display accessory is included unless the listing explicitly says it is. If the received portion appears different from the selected listing, photograph it with its packaging and contact us promptly.

Photos, color & natural variation

Photos illustrate the named plant or variety and its appearance. Living plants vary in leaf size, shape, root development, branching and fullness; a photo of an established specimen is not a measurement of each portion shipped. The product description and selected option remain the reference for your purchase.

Aquarium lighting, camera settings and the growing environment affect perceived color. Red or pink varieties can look different under different lighting and growing conditions. Do not use a photograph alone to select a plant’s care requirements or expect immediate mature coloration.

Above-water growth & the transition underwater

Some aquarium plants can grow with their leaves above water as well as submerged. These growth forms can have different leaf shapes and appearances. New underwater growth may look different from older leaves as the plant adjusts. This explanation does not mean every plant is supplied in the same growth form; follow any specific information in the listing.

Leaf loss or softening after a change of environment is often called melt. Look at the plant as a whole and its growing points rather than judging only one older leaf. Do not assume that a damaged plant is simply transitioning or wait for new growth before reporting an arrival problem.

This is background care information, not a new exclusion from the Live Arrival Guarantee. Arrival damage is assessed under the existing policy.

Planting: match the method to the plant

For stem plants, separate the stems and plant with room between them. For rosette plants, position the roots in the substrate without burying the crown. Remove transport bindings and growing material carefully where appropriate.

For Anubias and Java fern, keep the rhizome exposed rather than burying it. Moss can be divided into smaller portions and attached to suitable hardscape. Floating plants belong at the surface. Bulbs and tubers need species-specific planting depth; do not assume every type should be fully buried.

Keep plants damp while working. Follow the individual listing for placement and care, especially when a plant has unusual requirements. These are planting tips, not additional conditions for a claim.

Growth, tank conditions & choosing companions

Plan for the plant’s mature size, available light and the space it will occupy. A background stem plant, slow-growing rhizome plant and floating plant serve different roles; a purchase portion does not instantly create a finished aquascape.

Use the listing’s guidance on light, nutrients and carbon dioxide rather than assuming every plant needs the same setup. Growth rate and final appearance depend on aquarium conditions and maintenance. More light alone is not a substitute for a balanced setup.

Consider animals that dig, uproot or eat plants before choosing placement. Floating growth can shade plants below it, and fast-growing plants may need thinning. Observe new growth and make gradual, species-appropriate adjustments.

Hitchhikers & introducing plants

Our existing policy does not guarantee pest-free arrival. Plants can carry tiny organisms or eggs, including snail eggs, despite inspection. Inspect new plants before introduction, and consider separate observation or quarantine to protect an established aquarium.

Do not assume a plant is sterile, pesticide-free or safe for a particular treatment unless the listing explicitly provides that information. Sensitive leaves, mosses and roots can respond differently to dips. Research the exact plant and any treatment before using it; do not apply an animal medication or a strong dip by default.
