Floating Moss Ball

Live moss wrapped around a buoyant core — surface-level cover that drifts naturally and grows with the current.

Floats at the Surface Natural Drifting Movement Shrimp & Fry Friendly Low Light No CO₂ Required Nano Tank Ready

The Floating Moss Ball is live aquatic moss wrapped and secured around a buoyant core, designed to drift freely at the water surface rather than sit on the substrate. The gentle movement of the water keeps it in slow, natural motion — a visual effect that adds life and depth to the upper zone of the tank that rooted plants and hardscape simply can't replicate. As it floats, the moss surface accumulates biofilm and provides a dense, accessible canopy that shrimp and fry actively use for grazing and cover. It's a zero-effort addition that works immediately, grows steadily, and suits any tank from a heavily planted aquascape to a simple shrimp grow-out.

Growth & Behavior Over Time

Floats and moves with water flow — the buoyant core keeps the ball at or just below the surface, drifting slowly with filter output and surface agitation. The natural movement gives the tank a dynamic, living quality that static plants don't provide. Surface light drives vigorous growth — floating at the surface puts the moss directly in the brightest light zone of the tank. Even under modest lighting, the floating position gives the moss a meaningful advantage over submerged plants competing for the same light. Biofilm develops quickly on the outer surface — the moss texture begins accumulating biofilm within days, creating a rich, accessible foraging surface that shrimp and fry graze on actively, including juveniles too small to reach the substrate safely. Provides fry shelter at the surface — newly born shrimplets and fry naturally seek the surface layer in the first days of life. A floating moss ball gives them immediate, secure cover and a food source exactly where they need it most. Grows outward over time — the moss extends from the ball gradually, building a denser, fuller profile over weeks and months. Occasional light trimming keeps the shape tidy and encourages even, consistent growth across the surface. Compatible with any parameter range — aquatic moss is among the most parameter-tolerant plants available and performs well across both Neocaridina and Caridina setups without any adjustment.

Getting Started

1 Rinse before placing — give the moss ball a gentle rinse in dechlorinated or tank water before introducing it. This removes any loose debris from shipping and helps the moss settle quickly into the new environment.
2 Place directly on the surface — simply set the ball on the water surface and allow it to find its natural floating position. Filter flow will move it gently around the tank — this is normal and part of the effect.
3 Adjust flow if needed — very strong surface agitation can push the ball into a corner constantly. If this happens, slightly reducing flow or redirecting the filter outlet downward will allow the ball to drift more freely across the surface.
4 Trim occasionally as the moss grows — once the moss begins extending outward, periodic light trimming with fine scissors keeps the ball tidy. Trimmings can be used to start new growth on driftwood or rocks, or to seed other areas of the tank.
💡 Bonus Tip

Running a floating moss ball alongside a sinking moss ball gives shrimp and fry access to foraging zones at both the surface and the substrate simultaneously — particularly useful in breeding tanks where shrimplets emerge at the surface and gradually migrate downward as they grow.

Very happy with the plants and shrimp I received I came back today for more

I’m so happy with the moss balls, plants and shrimp I received I came back today for another pack of golden shrimp and a few more plants. I’m in Florida so I was worried about heat when shipping but all the shrimp and plants came nice and healthy. Lost 3 shrimp 4 days later but the tank was only set up 2 days so it was my fault.
