King Rabbit Snail - Superior Shrimp and Aquatics
Freshwater Snails

King Rabbit Snail

A striking semi-aquatic snail from mangrove and tidal mudflat environments with a tall elongated spiral shell in earthy tan to chocolate brown tones. Rare in the hobby and unlike any standard freshwater snail in its requirements.

Semi-Aquatic, Not Fully Submerged Brackish or Low-End Freshwater Tall Elongated Spiral Shell Tan to Chocolate Brown Paludarium Ideal Rare in the Hobby

King Rabbit Snails (Cerithidea sp.) are a rare semi-aquatic snail native to mangrove forests, tidal mudflats, and estuaries across Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. They are named for their elongated spiral shell and the long, curious antennae that give them a superficial resemblance to the Tylomelania Rabbit Snails of Sulawesi, but they are an entirely different genus with entirely different care requirements. The most important distinction is that King Rabbit Snails are not fully aquatic animals. In their natural habitat they spend significant time above the waterline, climbing mangrove roots and tidal structures, and they need access to a dry area above the water surface to thrive in captivity. A standard submerged aquarium setup is not appropriate for this species. A paludarium, shoreline-style aquarium, or emersed setup with a substantial land area and access to shallow water is required. They will also escape any tank that is not fully covered.

Please Read Before Purchasing

King Rabbit Snails are semi-aquatic and cannot be kept in a standard fully submerged aquarium. They require a setup with both a water section and a dry land area they can access freely, such as a paludarium or a shoreline-style tank. Purchasing this snail for a standard shrimp or community aquarium without a land area will result in the snail's death. Please ensure your setup is appropriate before ordering.

Shell & Body

Tall elongated spiral shell with earthy tan to chocolate brown colouration gives the King Rabbit Snail a rugged, prehistoric character that reads as naturalistic and distinctive at close range. The shell surface ranges from smooth to slightly ridged depending on the individual and the conditions in which it grew, and the overall profile is taller and more slender than most commonly kept freshwater snails. Shell texture and tone vary between individuals, with no two being identical. Long curious antennae and an active, exploratory temperament make the King Rabbit Snail an engaging animal to observe. It probes its environment constantly and is frequently found climbing glass, hardscape, and any available vertical surface, behaviour that reflects its natural tidal lifestyle of moving between submerged and aerial zones throughout the day.

Setup, Water & Feeding

Semi-aquatic setup with a land area is non-negotiable. King Rabbit Snails must have access to a dry surface above the waterline at all times. In a fully submerged aquarium they will spend all of their time trying to escape, will not feed normally, and will decline quickly. A paludarium with a shoreline section, a tank with a raised platform or moss bank above the waterline, or a deliberately low water level with accessible dry hardscape are all workable approaches. The land area should be moist but not saturated. Brackish water is the natural environment, though low-end freshwater can be tolerated with careful acclimation. In the wild Cerithidea inhabit estuarine and tidal zones where salinity fluctuates. Many hobbyists maintain them in low-salinity brackish water (specific gravity 1.003 to 1.008) or acclimate them gradually to very soft freshwater. Stable parameters matter more than the precise salinity level, and sudden changes should be avoided. pH should be kept above 7.0 to protect the shell from erosion. A secure, fully covered tank is essential. King Rabbit Snails are determined and capable climbers. They will exit the water, climb the glass, and escape through any gap in the lid. A tight-fitting cover with no openings is required. Unlike fully aquatic snails, a King Rabbit Snail found on dry ground outside the tank is following its instincts rather than escaping distress, but it will desiccate quickly if not returned to a moist environment. Omnivorous grazer feeding on algae, biofilm, detritus, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers. In a well-established setup with surfaces for algae and biofilm growth they require little supplemental feeding. Offer algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach to ensure consistent nutrition. Feed on the land area or at the water's edge where the snail naturally forages. Cannot be bred in standard captive conditions. Cerithidea have a tidal breeding cycle requiring specific conditions that are impractical to replicate in a home aquarium. Larvae are planktonic and require marine conditions to develop. Captive breeding has not been documented for this genus in the hobby. All available specimens are wild-collected. Safe with peaceful tankmates of appropriate size. Keep away from aggressive crustaceans, large cichlids, pufferfish, or any species known to eat snails. Compatible with other peaceful semi-aquatic or brackish inhabitants in an appropriate setup.
Keeper's Note

The King Rabbit Snail rewards aquarists who build their setup around it rather than trying to fit it into an existing freshwater aquarium. A dedicated paludarium with a mangrove-style shoreline, a shallow brackish water section, and driftwood or cork bark extending above the waterline gives this snail the environment it needs to behave naturally and remain healthy long-term. In that context it is one of the most visually compelling and behaviourally interesting invertebrates available in the hobby.
