It was sold in the hobby for years as Pseudomugil paskai before being formally described as a distinct species in 2016. The colouration of adult males in peak condition is extraordinary for a fish barely 1.2 inches long -- the body glows red to orange-red, the eyes are a vivid electric blue, the fins carry scattered black spots and pale yellow-white markings on the tips, and a vivid blue iridescent stripe runs along the dorsal surface. In subdued lighting against dark substrate the fish appears to emit its own light. Native to blackwater habitats stained with tannins from leaf litter, it performs best in soft, slightly acidic water and a heavily planted setup with floating plants to diffuse overhead lighting. One of the most shrimp-compatible fish in the hobby due to its tiny mouth and peaceful disposition. Note: the species is IUCN Endangered in the wild due to habitat destruction -- most available specimens are captive-bred, which is strongly preferred.

5.5–7.5pH

1–10GH (dGH)

75–82°FTemperature

1.2 inMax Size

    Appearance & Display

The Glow Effect

Glowing red to orange-red body with electric blue eyes -- appears fluorescent under aquarium lighting. The body colouration of a peak-condition male P. luminatus has a neon quality that few freshwater fish match at any size.
